The following Courses are recognised by the BCU as appropriate First Aid Awards. In order to have an award not listed recognised a copy of the syllabus will need to be submitted along with details of the course length and the training provider to the British Canoe Union for approval.
HSE Approved Courses/Centres:
The BCU recognise the following HSE first aid awards:
• HSE Emergency First Aid at Work
(It is assumed this course is 6 hours, unless otherwise stated on the Certificate)
• HSE First Aid at Work (this is acceptable as the BCU 2 Day requirement)
The BCU recognise First Aid Certificates issued by HSE Approved Centres, (providing they meet the required length of training contact time). To find HSE approved centres click here.
4 Hour Courses:
• BCU Lifeguards, Primary First Aid
• REC, First Responder
• REC, Appointed Person
• High Peak First Aid, Urban Appointed Person
• High Peak First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Canoeist
• Appointed Person Certificate, issued by a HSE Approved Centre

How do I know if a First Aid Course is going to be OK?
1. Check the length of course required for your Coaching/Leadership qualification, (click here)
2. Check if the course appears on the list above, if not
3. Check to see if they are a HSE Approved Centre (click here) - and then check the training course contact time. Remember, it is assumed that;
- an "Appointed Person" Certificate, issued by a HSE Approved Centre is 4 hours, unless otherwise stated on the Certificate
- an "Emergency First Aid at Work" Certificate, issued by a HSE Approved Centre is 6 hours, unless otherwise stated on the Certificate
- from 1/10/2009 the HSE approved First Aid at Work becomes a 3 day course
