GB CANOEING PRESS RELEASE
Sunday 6th June 2010
Rachel Cawthorn’s Double Gold is the highlight of GB’s medal haul at
Canoe Sprint World Cup 3
Today was the final day of World Cup 3, taking place in Duisburg Germany (4 - 6 June) and there seemed to be no stopping the incredible Bronze European medallist, Rachel Cawthorn. Rachel today won a Gold medal in the Women’s K1 (Kayak single) 500m event (1:49.65), adding to her Gold in yesterday’s 1000m and her Bronze medal in the 200m on Friday.
Today, Cawthorn was up against the world’s best, including; Germany’s multiple Olympic Champion Katrin Wagner-Augustin and Italy’s Josefa Idem another Olympic Champion, both of whom were better rested than Cawthorn after her multiple events.
Rachel Cawthorn, Women’s K1 kayaker comments,
Commenting on how she felt going into the race,
“I felt a bit tired today after Friday and Saturday’s racing, but I achieve personal bests after a heavy week of training, so this was no different really – I knew I could do it here. My coach said that I should have saved a bit in yesterday’s 1000m race, after winning by such a margin, but I couldn’t resist speeding to the finish.”
Commenting on the race,
“I found the semi-final much tougher than I had expected, it was hard to qualify to the final. In the final I couldn’t see Idem or Wagner but I did have the Dane (Henriette Engelhansen) nearby, she set off really fast so I just concentrated on chasing her. There were the big names in the 500m, some of which hadn’t competed in individual events yesterday, but I felt confident with what I had to do.”
Twenty one year old golden girl Cawthorn is originally from a swimming background but was talent spotted for kayaking, she came fourth in the world last year and these performances will no doubt bode well for the forthcoming European and World Championships.
In the Women’s K2 (Kayak double), Olympian Jessica Walker (19 years old) and 22 year old Louisa Sawers very narrowly missed out on a second medal , they came fourth in the 500m today in a time of 1:43.69 (winning time was 1:42.66)and won a Bronze medal in yesterday’s 1000m.
Olympic Gold Champion Dr Tim Brabants MBE continued his strong comeback to the sport. Tim achieved 8th place in the 500m today. He was up against the world’s best including; Ken Wallace (AUS) the current 500m Olympic Champion and Bronze world medallist in the 500m last year, Anders Gustafsson (SWE) who won 500m Silver in the 2009 World Championships and the legendary Adam Van Koeverden (CAN) the 2004 Olympic Champion and Silver 500m Olympic medallist in 2008.
Tim also achieved an impressive 4th place in his favourite distance the 1000m yesterday. Yesterday’s 1000m performance improved three places on last weekend in Szeged, where he accomplished a remarkable 7th place (1000m) in his first major international sprint competition after only being back in full time training since February. Up until then, Brabants had been concentrating on his medical career.
In the Men’s K2, Liam Heath and Jonathan Schofield have been on fire. On Friday they stormed to the top of their 200m semi and straight to the top of the final in a time of 0:32.8730206. Adding a second Gold medal to last weekend’s Gold where they put in an equally spectacular performance winning their heat, semi final and final at World cup 2 Szeged Hungary.
The Men’s K1 200m event has replaced the Men’s K1 500m in the Olympics and will be in the London 2012 games.
Also on Friday, Ed McKeever won a Bronze medal in the individual Men’s K1 (Kayak single) 200m.
All in all, performances from the last two World cups certainly point to promising results in the forthcoming European (2-4 July) and World Championships (19 -22 August).
